Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThe oldest documentary record of fans appears in the Samguk sagi (History of the Three Kingdoms), which records that Gyeon Hwon (r. 892–935) of Hubaekje (Later Baekje) presented a peacock fan (gongjakseon) to King Taejo of Goryeo (r. 918–943). Fans are broadly divided into round fans (wonseon) and folding fans (jeopbuchae), and the peacock fan belongs to the round-fan category. Round fans, also known as banggu buchae, include the five-leaf fan (oyeopseon), the lotus-leaf fan (yeonyeopseon), the jwachoseon, the taegeuk fan (taegeukseon) and the peacock fan (gongjakseon); among these the peacock fan has long been cherished as a precious craft object for its splendour and dignity. Lee Han-gyu, the holder of fan-making skills, learned the technique of making peacock fans from his father, Lee Eul-yong, and continues the tradition of peacock-fan making.
