A deul norae ('field song') is a folk song sung during farm work. The Jangsandodeul Song was sung by women doing paddy work in Jangsan-myeon, Sinan-gun. Though it carries the hardship and sorrow of women's lives, it is vigorous and lighthearted. As it comes from an island, it was never mixed with the folk songs of other regions, so it remains distinctly local, with a feminine melody. It consists of the mojjigi song, sung while pulling up rice seedlings; the mosimgi song, sung while transplanting the seedlings; the nonmaegi song, sung while weeding the paddies; and the gilkkonaegi, sung on the way home once the weeding is finished. The rhythm moves from a slow beat into faster patterns such as jungmori, jungjungmori and jajinmori, so it never grows tedious, and it is entirely different from the field songs of Jindo Island or the labour songs of the mainland Namdo region. The Jangsandodeul Song embodies the life of the Korean people, and it was designated a heritage item for its distinctive melody and content.
