Jinju Gyobanggutgeori Dance refers to the gutgeori dance — a dance performed to gutgeori rhythm, a moderate rhythmic cycle used in shamanic and folk music — that has been handed down by the gyobang of Jinju. A gyobang was an institution that taught gisaeng (female entertainers) music, song and dance; the dance came to be called gyobanggutgeori dance because it began when shamans, barred from practising by a government ban on shamanism, entered the gyobang. The dance opens with jajintaryeong, a fast taryeong rhythm within the gutgeori cycle, and in its yeombul (chant) section the fast jajin rhythm appears more than the taryeong rhythm. It gives an impression that is calm yet intense, delicate yet sorrowful.
