Buyeo Yongjeongnisangyeo Song is known as hosangsori — hosang meaning the death of a person who has lived a long and blessed life. The exact period in which hosangsori began is not known, but it is presumed to have been passed down for a long time through the lead singer Ha Un, a holder of the skill for hosang performance. Yongjeongni Sangyeosori is made up of several parts, including jinsori, jjaksu sori, dumadi sori and jajin sori. Of these, jjaksu sori, in which the bier-bearers divide into groups and exchange different melodies with one another, is a distinctive feature. When the bier sets out, the slowest part, jinsori, is sung first, and jjaksu sori then begins. In jjaksu sori, one melody does not end with a refrain before the next starts; instead, a different melody begins straight away, so that in this call-and-response form the melodies overlap, producing what is known as a layered bier song. Because two different sets of lyrics are sung at once, a high degree of vocal skill is required, and the music stands out for its sorrowful, solemn quality. This jjaksu sori is found only in Buyeo and parts of Gongju, and is a characteristic song representing the Baekje cultural sphere. Buyeo Yongjeongnisangyeo Song is a solemn song of unique character, showing how an entire village community works through its grief at death together.
