Iksan Gisebae
익산기세배 · 益山旗歲拜

Iksan Gisebae is one of the representative folk games of North Jeolla Province. Gisebae, literally a "flag bow", is a game representing farming culture, a folk custom of Jeongwol Daeboreum (the fifteenth day of the first lunar month) handed down since the days of the ancient states of Mahan and Baekje. Twelve villages of Geumma gather in one place to pray to the god of farming for a bountiful harvest, and the game's purpose is to build cooperation and solidarity among the villages. It consists of a flag rite, a procession leading the flags, a village guardian-shrine rite, the flag bow itself, flag play, and a group dance. Since 1995, the Iksan Gisebae Preservation Society has been established and has worked to carry on and develop this tradition.
