Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krSedo Communal Labour Pung Master Artisan is a village communal game handed down since long ago in Dongsa-ri, Sedo-myeon, 15 km southeast of the seat of Buyeo County. Dongsa-ri is a typical farming village, south-facing with broad fields stretching out in front, that has long practised labour-intensive agriculture centred on rice farming. In this village, once the rice-farming season begins in earnest, there is a tradition of forming a dure (communal labour group) to work the fields together, and doing dure farming is called "dure meokneunda" (eating the dure). Sedo Communal Labour Pung Master Artisan, in which cooperative labour and communal entertainment are closely combined, consists of the jilgutgarak, chilchaegarak, nonpungjanggarak, jjeokjjeogigarak, durangjilgutgarak, jajinmachigarak, madangbalbigarak, dumachigarak and maejojigarak rhythms, and relatively well preserves the tradition of "Chungcheong-do pungjang" in its rhythms, performance format and costume. This pungjang was carried on centred on Park San-bong, known as a jaepikkun (skilled performer), and was passed to Choi Jong-nam, after which Seo Jae-eok, Yun Gu-byeong and Gwon Hyeon-ju were recognised as holders and continued the tradition. Currently Ryu Gi-seok is recognised as the holder and continues the transmission activities.
