Gokseong Jukdong Farmers’ Music
곡성죽동농악 · 谷城竹洞農樂
Jukdong Village in Gokseong is a leading village in Jeollanam-do carrying on the lineage of Honam Jwado nongak, farmers' music of the "left province" style; unlike Honam Udo ("right province") nongak and the farmers' music of the southern coastal region, Jwado nongak has developed elaborate gong rhythms and the lead gong player's bupo nori (feather-plume headgear performance), featuring many delicate and difficult techniques. The rhythms and movements are also relatively fast, and group technique is highly developed. Jukdong nongak has been transmitted as a complete performance, beginning with village rituals such as madangbapgi (treading the yard) and dangsan gut (village guardian-tree ritual), continuing through the deul-dangsan and nal-dangsan gut performed while touring nearby villages for geolgung (fund-raising processions), and concluding with pan-gut, a full performance piece; it thus boasts a wider and more splendid repertoire than the farmers' music of any other region. Jukdong Village has faithfully carried on the tradition of nongak, and is consolidating this transmission through various performances and community activities. Above all, training sessions are held on Tuesday and Thursday evenings at a pungmul training hall, renovated for instruction, and its front yard. Park Dae-eop, the skill holder succeeding Gi Chang-su and Kang Sun-dong, serves as the sangsoe, the lead gong player leading Jukdong nongak. Jukdong nongak has won numerous awards at national competitions, including the Grand Prize at the 1998 Namdo Cultural Festival and the Excellence Award (Minister of Culture and Tourism Award) at the 1999 Korean Folk Art Festival.
