This is a site commemorating Sin Sung-gyeom, a founding meritorious subject of Goryeo. Sin Sung-gyeom (d. 927) was the founding ancestor of the Pyeongsan Sin clan; in 918, together with Bae Hyeon-gyeong, Hong Yu and Bok Ji-gyeom, he drove out Gungye and enthroned Wang Geon, thereby contributing to the founding of Goryeo. In 927, the tenth year of King Taejo's reign, while fighting the army of Later Baekje under Gyeon Hwon at Gongsan in Daegu, King Taejo was surrounded by the enemy and in grave danger; Sin Sung-gyeom put on the king's clothes and disguised himself as Taejo to confront the enemy in his place, and was killed in battle. Grieving deeply over his death, King Taejo had his body recovered and buried at Gwanghaeju (present-day Chuncheon), and built the Sunjeoldan altar and the temples Jimyosa and Mirisa to pray for the repose of his soul. In 1607, the fortieth year of King Seonjo's reign, Yu Yeong-sun, the governor of Gyeongsang-do, built Pyochungsa Temple on the site of Jimyosa and enshrined Sin Sung-gyeom there; the shrine was later granted a royal charter as a seowon [private Confucian academy] and maintained accordingly. When Pyochungsa was abolished under the decree ordering the closure of seowon academies in 1871, the eighth year of King Gojong's reign, his descendants built a new shrine, Pyochungjae, which survives to this day.
