This is the site where Bak Paeng-nyeon (1417–1456), an early Joseon civil official and one of the Sayuksin (the Six Martyred Ministers, executed for their loyalty to the deposed King Danjong), once lived. Bak Paeng-nyeon passed the civil service examination in 1434, the sixteenth year of King Sejong, and after holding various posts became an official of the Jiphyeonjeon (Hall of Worthies, a royal research institute). In 1455, when Grand Prince Suyang seized the throne from his young nephew King Danjong, Bak Paeng-nyeon plotted to restore Danjong, and was executed in 1456, the second year of King Sejo. After his death, Confucian scholars, concerned that the site of his house would be lost, gathered its foundation stones in 1668, the ninth year of King Hyeonjong, and erected a stele with text composed by Song Si-yeol and calligraphy by Song Jun-gil. In 1672, the thirteenth year of King Hyeonjong, a bigak (a pavilion built to house the memorial stele) was constructed and named Jangjeoljeong.
