Un Jusanseong Fortress

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krUn Jusanseong Fortress was built at a strategically important military location from which one could see not only Cheonan and Cheongju to the north but also Asan Bay at a glance. The fortress was constructed during the Baekje period, and is known as the site of the final struggle to save the kingdom waged by the Baekje restoration army, led by King Pung, Boksin and General Dochim, after the fall of Baekje in 660. A brief description appears in the Historic Sites entry for Jeonui-hyeon in the Sinjeung dongguk yeoji seungnam (Newly Augmented Survey of the Geography of Korea), which records that the fortress had already fallen into ruin by the early Joseon period. The fortress has both an inner wall and an outer wall, and fragments of Baekje-period roof tiles have been excavated within it.
