Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krJin is a shortened form of jinyeong, a type of local military garrison that managed regional forces under the local administrative system. Hwadojin was a garrison established in the late Joseon period to keep watch on the Western warships that frequently appeared along the coast, and it oversaw the Jangdo and Nonhyeon gun batteries. Hwadojin was set up in response to Japanese demands to open the port of Incheon; the royal court ordered Eoyeongdaejang (commander of the Royal Guards) Sin Jeong-hui and the Ganghwa Yusu (governor of Ganghwa) Yi Gyeong-ha to build it, and construction was completed in 1879. However, following the military administration reforms of the Gabo Reform, the garrison was abolished and its buildings demolished. In 1982 the old buildings of Hwadojin were restored on the basis of the Hwadojindo, a painting depicting the garrison.
