Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is the tomb of General Kim Jong-seo (1383–1453), pen name Jeoljae, a loyal subject of the Joseon period who served under King Danjong. After passing the civil service examination in 1405, the fifth year of King Taejong, he held various posts including Military Commissioner of Hamgil-do. In 1434, the sixteenth year of King Sejong, he opened up the Six Garrisons (Yukjin), achieving the great feat of expanding the nation's territory; it was at this time that Korea's present border along the Duman (Tumen) River was fixed. He also took part in compiling the Goryeosa, the Goryeosa jeoryo and the Sejong sillok (Annals of King Sejong), showing his scholarly side as well. When King Danjong came to the throne at the age of twelve, Kim Jong-seo served as State Councillor of the Left, assisting the young king, but in 1453, the first year of King Danjong's reign, he and his two sons were put to death by Grand Prince Suyang (later King Sejo), who coveted the throne. The present gravestone and the plaque reading "Chungsin jeongnyeo" (Commemorative Gate for a Loyal Subject) were erected in 1764, the twenty-second year of King Yeongjo. The burial ground covers about 200 pyeong, and its round perimeter wall and three-gate entrance were installed in recent times.
