Yongdam Dolmen No. 4
용담지석묘4호 · 용담지석묘 4호

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krDolmens (jiseongmyo) are the representative tomb type of the Bronze Age, also known simply as dolmens, and are generally understood to be the burial places of a ruling class with economic wealth or political power. Korean dolmens are divided into the table-type, in which four supporting stones are set up to form a stone chamber topped with a huge, flat capstone, and the go-board-type, in which a stone chamber is built underground, small supporting stones are erected, a covering stone is laid over them, and a huge capstone is placed on top. This dolmen originally stood at 751 Yongdam-dong, Jeju City, but was relocated and restored in front of the airport during work to expand the airport site. Its form is of the go-board type, but because a stone chamber was formed by arranging several broad, flat stones like a folding screen beneath the capstone, it has been reclassified as the capstone-type. The capstone measures 2.85 m in length and 2.05 m in width, and rests on four broad, flat supporting stones. Clear traces of dressing remain on its upper surface and around its edges, and on the upper surface are small round or oval cup-marks (seonghyeol), holes made in the hope of a good harvest or of bearing children. It is presumed to date from the late Bronze Age or the early Iron Age.
