Dolmens (jiseokmyo, also called goindol) are the representative tombs of the Bronze Age, generally known to have been the tombs of a ruling class with economic wealth or political power. Dolmens in Korea are divided into the table type, in which four supporting stones are erected to form a burial chamber with a huge, flat capstone placed on top, and the go-board type, in which a burial chamber is built underground with small supporting stones, over which a capstone is placed. This dolmen, in Ora-dong, Jeju City, is of the go-board type. The capstone is 2.5m long and 2.07m wide, with three supporting stones set to the east, south and west respectively. On the higher, sloping side no separate supporting stone was erected, the ground itself being used instead, while on the lower side supporting stones were set up so that the capstone would lie level. Plain coarse pottery, a stone axe and other artefacts were excavated here. It is estimated to date to the late Bronze Age or early Iron Age.
