Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krDolmens are the representative tombs of the Bronze Age, also called goindol, and are known chiefly as the burial places of a ruling class with economic wealth or political power. Korean dolmens are divided into two types: the table type, in which four supporting stones are set upright to form a burial chamber with a huge flat capstone placed on top, and the go-board type, in which a burial chamber is built in the ground with small supporting stones set beneath a capstone. This dolmen, in Doryeon-dong, Jeju City, is of the go-board type. Its capstone measures 2.45 m in length and 1.75 m in width, and shows traces of having been deliberately shaped like a turtle shell. Three supporting stones, each about 0.15 cm high, hold up the capstone, one side of which is raised to a height of 22 cm; for this reason it is regarded as one of the arch-shaped dolmens among Jeju's dolmen types. The turtle-shell shape of the capstone is a feature of dolmens found in Kitakyushu, Japan, and is also seen in Oedo-dong, Jeju City.
