Dolmens (jiseongmyo) are the representative tomb type of the Bronze Age, also known simply as dolmens, and are generally understood to be the burial places of a ruling class with economic wealth or political power. Korean dolmens are divided into the table-type, in which four supporting stones are set up to form a stone chamber topped with a huge, flat capstone; the go-board-type, in which a stone chamber is built underground, small supporting stones are erected, and a capstone is placed on top; and the capstone-type, which resembles the go-board type but has no supporting stones. This dolmen, standing in the middle of a field at Gwangnyeong-ri, Aewol-eup, in the former Bukjeju-gun (North Jeju County), is of the capstone type: stone slabs served both as supporting stones and as the walls of a stone coffin, with the burial place set above ground. It measures 3.69 m in length and 2.96 m in width, making it the largest among the dolmens of the Gwangnyeong-ri area. On the slightly higher eastern side, small stones are stacked in layers, while to the north-west and south-west stand well-dressed stone slabs 1.14 m and 1.18 m high respectively. The capstone placed on top is thick on the higher eastern side and thin on the western side, leaving the burial place completely exposed.
