Dolmens (jiseongmyo) are the representative tombs of the Bronze Age, also known as goindol, and are generally understood to have been the tombs of a ruling class with economic means or political power. Korean dolmens fall into two types: the table type, in which four support stones are set up to form a stone chamber topped with a massive, flat capstone, and the go-board type, in which a stone chamber is built underground with small support stones placed beneath the capstone. The Sillye-ri dolmen, built around the 1st century BC, is a typical go-board-type dolmen in the Jeju style, with several support stones propping up the capstone so that the capstone itself forms an arch shape. Because the dolmen retains its original condition, and because of the unusual topographical feature of standing on a hill higher than the surrounding flat land together with its distinctive method of construction, it is highly valued both historically and academically.
