This is the birthplace of General Gang Gam-chan, posthumously titled Inheon-gong, a celebrated commander of Goryeo. Because a great star was said to have fallen from the sky on the day he was born, the site of his birthplace was called Nakseongdae, meaning "the mound where a star fell." Originally, a Goryeo-period three-storey stone pagoda in the style of a sarira reliquary [a pagoda enshrining Buddhist relics], inscribed "Gang Gam-chan Nakseongdae," stood here and marked his birthplace, but when Nakseongdae Park was built in 1973 this pagoda was moved to the grounds of Anguksa Temple within the park. In 1974 a commemorative stele was erected on the original site to mark it as a place of long-standing historic significance.
