Buinsa Temple Site
부인사지 · 夫人(符仁)寺址

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krBuinsa Temple was a hall where prayers were offered for the repose of Silla's Queen Seondeok; it is said that "Buin" (夫人) refers to Queen Seondeok herself. The site originally housed the woodblocks of the Goryeo Chojo Tripitaka, carved in the hope that the power of the Buddha would repel foreign invasions, and it also served as a stronghold for monks who rose up in resistance to military rule during Goryeo. It was burned down, however, during the Mongol invasion in the 19th year of King Gojong of Goryeo (1232). Many stone structures from that period remain at the temple site, including retaining walls, foundation stones and flagpole supports, while building foundation stones, stone pagodas and stone lanterns lie scattered in the surrounding area. These stone remains provide evidence of the scale Buinsa once had.
