This is the tomb of General Jeon Sang-ui (1575–1627), a civil official of the mid-Joseon period. He passed the military examination in 1603, the thirty-sixth year of King Seonjo, and beginning with the post of Seonjeongwan held a succession of posts at court and in the provinces; in 1625, the third year of King Injo, he served as Magistrate of Guseong while concurrently holding the post of Left Camp Commander. In 1617, the ninth year of King Gwanghaegun, he travelled to Japan with O Yun-gyeom as a Hoedapsa (reply envoy) and achieved the feat of bringing home more than 1,500 compatriots who had been taken to Japan during the Imjin War. In 1627, the fifth year of King Injo, when the Later Jin invaded with an army of 30,000 on the pretext of King Injo's pro-Ming policy, he fought fiercely in the Battle of Anju Fortress. When reinforcements failed to arrive, he resolved to die together with all his officers and men, climbed onto the pavilion tower to keep fighting, and fell in battle at the age of 53. After the conflict ended, he was posthumously raised to the rank of Jaheon-daebu, Minister of War, concurrently Jieumbusa; in 1684, the tenth year of King Sukjong, he was enshrined at Chungminsa Shrine in Anju, and in 1849, the fifteenth year of King Heonjong, at Gyeongnyeolsa Shrine in Gwangju and Gyullim Seowon in Jeju. The tomb precinct today holds the joint burial of the general together with his wife, Lady Im of the Pungcheon clan, and Lady Kim of the Gwangsan clan; the base of the mound is ringed with kerbstones. In front of the tomb stands a gravestone erected in 1857, and near the precinct stands a sindobi (a stele set up beside the road near a tomb to commemorate the lifetime achievements of a king or high official), erected in 1979 by the Relics Preservation Association.
