Hongsanmandeokgyo Bridge Stele
KOGL Type 1Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.kr

This stele was erected to commemorate the building of a stone bridge called Mandeokgyo across the Hongsancheon Stream, which once flowed along the north side of the Hongsan town centre. The date on which Mandeokgyo, which formed the great gateway into the town of Hongsan, was first built is not known. The stele originally stood beside the bridge, but after the bridge was lost it was moved to Hongsan Elementary School, and later moved again to its present location inside Hongsan Guest House. The stele's body and capstone were carved from a single block of stone, and the capstone is engraved with a cloud pattern. It was erected in 1681, the seventh year of King Sukjong of Joseon. The inscription records that a stream ran to the east of the guest house with no bridge across it, until Cheomji (a minor military office) Seo Deok-hae, after long effort, built this rainbow-shaped bridge over it. The inscription was composed by Yi Bok-hyeong and written in calligraphy by U Jeong-gu.
