Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krJogyeongdan Altar marks the burial site of Yi Han, the founding ancestor of the Jeonju Yi clan. After founding the Joseon Dynasty, King Taejo Yi Seong-gye had this burial site on Geonjisan Mountain specially protected, and successive kings thereafter likewise took great care over its preservation. In particular, in 1899, the third year of the Gwangmu era, Emperor Gojong had an altar built and a stele erected there, appointed officials to look after it, and ordered that a memorial rite be held once a year. The inscription carved on the stele, reading "Daehan Jogyeongdan" (Jogyeongdan Altar of the Korean Empire), together with its epitaph, was written by Emperor Gojong himself. Together with Gyeonggijeon Shrine and Jogyeongmyo Shrine, Jogyeongdan Altar symbolises Jeonju's status as the birthplace of the Joseon Dynasty.
