Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krBaesan Fortress Site is an old fortress site on the middle slope and summit of Baesan, in Yeonsan-dong, Yeonje-gu, and is presumed to be a relic of the era of Geochilsan-guk, the ancient name for this region. According to the "Biography of Geodo" chapter of the Samguk sagi, during the reign of Silla's fourth king, King Talhae, a general named Geodo conquered Geochilsan-guk, incorporated it into Silla and established Geochilsan-gun. While the exact dating given in the Samguk sagi requires further verification, the account suggests that the Dongnae region (including present-day Yeonje-gu), where Baesan Fortress Site stands, belonged to the tribal-state period, that is, the Three Kingdoms period, before it was absorbed into Silla. On the ridge below Baesan Fortress Site lies the Yeonsan-dong Tomb Cluster (a historic site), and across the Oncheoncheon stream it faces the Bokcheon-dong Tomb Cluster (also a historic site), drawing attention to the relationship among Baesan Fortress and the two tomb clusters. Baesan Fortress is a temoe-style mountain fortress, its wall of stone encircling the hillside of Baesan; excavations carried out in 2017–2018 suggest it was built sometime between the Three Kingdoms period and the Unified Silla period, and two circular water-collection basins were uncovered just below the summit. Baesan Fortress Site helps in understanding the shifting seat of local administration in the Busan (Dongnae) region, a lineage running from Dongnae Goeupseong (the old Dongnae town wall, in the area of the Busan Regional Military Manpower Administration in Mangmi-dong, Suyeong-gu) to Dongnaeeupseong (the Dongnae Town Wall, a Busan Metropolitan City-designated monument).
