Bongmutoseong Earthen Fortification

To the south-west, the site of the earthen fortification is bounded by a high cliff facing the Geumho River, and steep slopes rise across its front except for a small section to the north-east. The fortification's circumference is about 350 m, and given the modest height and width of its walls, it is thought to have served as a refuge fortress rather than for military purposes. On a low hill about 1 km to the south-east of the fortification lie the tombs of Bongmu-dong and Bullo-dong, and the site is also linked, across the Geumho River, to the Geomdan-dong earthen fortification. This suggests that a large group centred on Palgongsan Mountain and the Geumho River had formed in this area, and that it was this group that built Bongmutoseong. Pottery fragments found within the fortification indicate that it dates to the Three Kingdoms period, around the third to fourth century.
