Bomunsa Temple Site
보문사지 · 普文寺址

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThe site of Bomunsa Temple lies on the ridge running from the summit of Bomunsan Mountain down towards Baenamugol (Pear-tree Valley). The site extends about 70m east-west and 50m north-south, its south-facing slope cut into three stepped terraces. On the lowest terrace stands a retaining wall over 10m long and 1m high, with traces of a building six kan wide across the front and two kan deep. The second terrace is thought to have held two buildings, but the damage is too severe for their size to be determined. Just below the retaining wall in front of the uppermost terrace stands a pair of gwaebul-support posts, posts used to hang a gwaebul, a huge Buddhist painting displayed outdoors for major ceremonies, showing that this terrace was the site of the Daeungjeon, the main hall. The roof-tile and pottery fragments excavated at the site are mostly relics of the Joseon period. Records in the late-Joseon-period Dosanseowonji confirm that Bomunsa Temple was one of the important temples of the region.
