Dolmens are the characteristic tombs of the Bronze Age, also known as goindol, and are understood to have been the graves of a ruling class with economic or political power. Korean dolmens are divided into the table type, in which four support stones are set upright to form a burial chamber above ground topped with a huge flat capstone, and the go-board type, in which the burial chamber is dug underground with small support stones and a capstone laid over it. This dolmen group, in Cheonjeon-ri, Chuncheon, is of the table type. Ten dolmens were found together during excavation, though only five remain today. The capstones measure roughly 2.2 to 2.6m in length, and the support stones stand 1.12m high; three stone arrowheads, tube-shaped beads and numerous fragments of plain, undecorated pottery were recovered in quantity. The discovery of dolmens clustered together in the Cheonjeon-ri area of Chuncheon indicates that a tribal society had already formed in the Chuncheon basin. The use of plain pottery also suggests that the inhabitants farmed along the banks of the Soyanggang River, making this an important site for the study of Korean prehistory.
