Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krChuwolsan Mountain stands in Wolgye-ri, Yong-myeon, 7km from Damyang-eup, and at 729m above sea level is not a particularly high peak. Before the summit, a hermitage called Boriam, a Cultural Heritage Material, perches on a rock face; it is also known as the place where the wife of the righteous army general Kim Deok-ryeong died a martyr's death during the Japanese invasion of 1592. According to a legend attached to Boriam, in the Goryeo period National Preceptor Bojo carved three wooden hawks and released them, and a temple was built wherever each came to rest; these temples are said to be Songgwangsa Temple in Suncheon, Baegyangsa Temple in Jangseong, and Boriam Hermitage on Chuwolsan Mountain. Together with Geumseongsanseong Fortress, Chuwolsan Mountain was the scene of fierce fighting during the Japanese invasions, and it was also where the Donghak Peasant Army made its last stand. Its dense forest and dramatically weathered crags and cliffs place it among the five great mountains of South Jeolla Province. The view from the summit over Damyang Lake and its surroundings is spectacular, and the mountain is also noted for its wild orchids and its clear water and abundant springs. Together with Wolchulsan Mountain, Chuwolsan Mountain is so scenic that the entire mountain has been designated a national heritage site in South Jeolla Province, and it also preserves historical remains.
