Samsaseok refers to the stones into which arrows struck when Go, Yang and Bu — the founding ancestors of Tamna (present-day Jeju Island) — established their kingdom and, having taken the three princesses of Byeongnangguk as their wives, shot arrows to decide where to set their capital. Because arrows were shot here, the stones are also called Sisaseok (矢射石, "arrow-shot stone"), and local people call them "Salsseondiwat." Samsaseok is made of basalt about 55 cm across, and is protected by a stone marker 149 cm high and 67 cm wide, erected in 1735, the eleventh year of King Yeongjo's reign, by Yang Jong-chang. The stele beside Samsaseok was erected by Kim Jeong, Magistrate of Jeju-mok, and its reverse records that in 1930 Go Han-ryong, Go Dae-gil and Go Yeong-gyeong repaired it again and built a surrounding wall.
