Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is the tomb of Ryu Sa-nul (1375-1440), posthumous title Munsuk, a civil official active in the late Goryeo and early Joseon periods. His courtesy name was Ihaeng, his clan seat was Munhwa, and his posthumous title Munsuk. He was the great-grandson of Yu Sik; his grandfather was Yu An-taek, his father Yu Im, who held the post of Jeonnongjeong, and his mother a daughter of Gwon Suk. In the early Joseon period he passed the saengwon licentiate examination at sixteen, and at eighteen, in 1393, the second year of King Taejo, passed the triennial civil service examination with the rank of dongjinsa. He went on to serve as Jwajeongeon and as Jeongnang in the Ministry of Personnel and the Ministry of War, and in 1407, the seventh year of King Taejong, passed the special civil re-examination in the byeonggwa rank to become Jangnyeong of the Saheonbu, the Office of the Inspector-General. He then served as Jungseosain, and in 1409, the ninth year of King Taejong, as Jibui of the Saganwon, the Office of Censors, impeached Min Mu-gu and Min Mu-jil, King Taejong's brothers-in-law and younger brothers of Queen Munkyeong, King Taejong's consort, for which he was exiled to Anak in Hwanghae Province. He later returned to office, but in 1416, the sixteenth year of King Taejong, while serving as Jisinsa, Chief Royal Secretary, he erred in presenting an aromatic medicinal oil to the throne and was again exiled to Anak. He was soon released, however, and after serving as Governor of Gyeongsang Province, Dosunmunsa of Hamgyeong Province and Governor of Gangwon Province, became Mayor of Hanseong in 1423, the fifth year of King Sejong. In 1428, the tenth year of King Sejong, he served as Daejehak of the Office of Special Advisers and travelled to Ming China as an envoy of congratulation, and in 1432, the fourteenth year of King Sejong, became Deputy Commissioner of the Jungchuwon, the Privy Council. Having lost his parents early in life, Ryu Sa-nul studied diligently under his uncle and became well versed in the classics and skilled in literary composition. He also had a deep understanding of music: while serving as Daejehak of the Office of Special Advisers he concurrently held the post of Superintendent of Musical Studies and wrote the preface to the Aakbo, the score of court ritual music, and in 1434, the sixteenth year of King Sejong, composed the Jinjakgasa, included in the Jeagakbu, making, together with Bak Yeon, a major contribution to the systematisation of Korea's court ritual music. The burial ground today holds several tombs of the Munhwa Ryu clan; before Ryu Sa-nul's own tomb stand an offering table and stone civil-official figures installed much later, along with a memorial stele composed by Seong Gu-yong.
