Chunseolheon is the place where Heo Baek-ryeon, a master of Korean painting, lived and worked for thirty years, from 1946, immediately after liberation, until 1977. Heo Baek-ryeon was a descendant of Heo Ryeon, who perfected the Korean Southern School of painting in the late Joseon period; he learned the fundamentals of painting from Heo Ryeon's son, Heo Hyeong, and gained further experience studying painting in Japan and Seoul. After settling in Gwangju, Jeolla-do, in 1938, he founded the Yeonjinhoe society to preserve traditional painting and calligraphy and to train younger artists, and established the Samae School to cultivate rural leaders. He also took over a tea plantation on Mudeungsan Mountain that had been abandoned by its Japanese owner and ran it as the Chunseol Tea Garden, devoting himself to the cultivation and spread of traditional tea. The building known as Chunseolheon was newly built of brick in 1950 after the old house on the site was demolished, and a wooden signboard reading "Chunseolheon" hangs in the main hall. To the left of the wooden-floored hall are two rooms used for his artistic work, one an ondol (heated-floor) room and the other a Japanese-style tatami room.
