Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krFortress Sammun Gate Historic Remains marks the site of Seong Sam-mun's maternal grandparents' house, where he was born. Seong Sam-mun was one of the Sayuksin, the "six martyred ministers" who opposed Prince Suyang's deposing of his nephew King Danjong to seize the throne. During the reign of King Sejong (1418–1450) he served as a scholar at the Hall of Worthies (Jiphyeonjeon) and made major contributions to the creation of the Hunminjeongeum. He also held firm to his principles over Danjong's deposition and was put to death for it. In the second year of King Sukjong (1676), the local magistrate Yi Ryang built a shrine near Seong Sam-mun's old house and petitioned that the Sayuksin be enshrined together there; the court named it Nogun Seowon, later renamed Noeun. Memorial rites were held there every December until the academy was abolished under the Daewongun's decree dissolving Confucian academies. Afterwards Confucian scholars enshrined the spirit tablets of the Sayuksin at a site called Noeundan and continued to hold rites there. In 1954 the Hongseong Society for the Preservation of Historic Sites repaired the altar, and rites have since been held there every year on the fifteenth day of the tenth lunar month. The former altar site lies about 50 m northeast of here, and the memorial stele stands in the village about 30 m away.
