Gupowaeseong Fortress
구포왜성 · 龜浦倭城

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krGupowaeseong Fortress is a branch fortress of Gimhae Jukdo Waeseong. It is a waeseong, a Japanese-style fortress, built in 1593 by the Japanese general Kobayakawa to maintain communication between Gimhae and Yangsan; it stood along the Nakdonggang River, with ships able to anchor below it. During the Japanese invasions, it was garrisoned and defended by troops under the Japanese commander Nabeshima. Among the eleven waeseong remaining in the Busan area, it is one of those with the most traces surviving, and the stone-built section at the top of the fortress remains almost intact, making it a valuable resource for the study of waeseong. The walls were built in a spiral form, narrowing as they rise from bottom to top.
