This is the house where the Western-style painter O Ji-ho (1905–1982) lived from 1954, while working as a professor at Chosun University, until his death in 1982. He was from Hwasun in Jeollanam-do, and his pen name was Mohusanin. As a painter who adopted and indigenised the Impressionist style, he organised the Gwangju Art Research Society and established the Jeonnam Provincial Art Exhibition, leading the development of regional art and establishing figurative painting as the dominant style in the Gwangju art world. He served as an invited artist of the National Art Exhibition of Korea, and in 1976 became a member of the National Academy of Arts of the Republic of Korea. The house is thatched, four kan wide and one kan deep, with narrow wooden verandas at the front and back. Square pillars were used at the front and round pillars at the back. The gate quarters, about 6 pyeong in size and used as his painting studio, have a skylight on the north side to let in good light, and the roof is a gabled roof forming the shape of the character 人 when viewed from the side. The house was originally built more than 100 years ago but had fallen into disrepair and was fully repaired in 1986. O Ji-ho made a great contribution to the development of Korean art, and this was the place where he devoted himself to his work; it offers a glimpse into his life and artistic practice.
