Yi Byeong-gi Birthplace
이병기선생생가 · 李秉岐先生生家

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is the birthplace of Garam Yi Byeong-gi (1891–1968), a scholar of Korean literature and a writer of sijo, a traditional three-line Korean poetic form. Pursuing a new movement for the modern reform and revival of sijo, Garam devoted himself to excavating and studying classical literature, and worked through the education of young people to preserve the nation's language and writing. His principal achievements lay in sijo, but he also left a considerable body of work in bibliography and Korean literary studies more broadly. He deserves particular credit for discovering and introducing works such as Sin Jae-hyo's pansori, a traditional genre of narrative singing. His major works include the Garam Sijo Collection and Introduction to Korean Literature. The house follows the layout of a yangban household of the late Joseon period, and its main hall (anchae), men's quarters (sarangchae), storage hall (gwangchae) and pavilion (mojeong) survive. There are two small ponds in front of the pavilion. The roofs were originally thatched, and the buildings themselves have no particular distinguishing features, but the main hall and men's quarters retain an antique charm, and the arrangement of the pavilion and ponds lends the place a modest, unpretentious feel. Yi Byeong-gi was born here, and here he also died.
