Myeonangjeong Pavilion
면앙정 · 俛仰亭

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krMyeonangjeong Pavilion was built in 1533, the 28th year of King Jungjong, by Song Sun (pen name Myeonangjeong, 1493–1582), who retired from office and spent his remaining years here teaching scholars; it was also a place where he discussed learning with notable figures including Yi Hwang (pen name Toegye). Song Sun, a civil official of the mid-Joseon period, passed the state examination and held various offices before devoting his later years to scholarship, during which he wrote many books. The original pavilion was destroyed in 1597, the 30th year of King Seonjo, during the Japanese invasions, and was rebuilt by his descendants in 1654, the 5th year of King Hyojong. The pavilion has three kan (bays) across the front and two kan on the side, with a hip-and-gable roof that, seen from the side, forms the shape of the character for "eight." Although Myeonangjeong is a building of simple style, it holds great historical value and is an important resource for study.
