Pochungsa Temple
포충사 · 褒忠祠

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krPochungsa is dedicated to the memory of Go Gyeong-myeong (1533–1592) and his sons Go Jonghu (1554–1593) and Go Inhu (1561–1592), together with Yu Paeng-no (1554–1592) and An Yeong (1564–1592), who led righteous armies from the Honam region and died fighting to the last at the Battle of Geumsan Mountain during the Imjin War. Along with Piramseowon Confucian Academy in Jangseong, it is one of the two great seowon academies of the Jeolla region that were not demolished even when the Daewongun ordered the closure of seowon academies nationwide. This shrine was built by Confucian scholars of the Honam region after the war to honour these loyal and righteous men; in 1603 the descendants of Go Gyeong-myeong and his disciple Park Ji-hyo petitioned the king and were granted the name "Pochung", meaning "honouring loyalty", for the shrine. In 1980 a new shrine hall, a relics exhibition hall (Jeonggigwan), inner and outer three-bay gates, a commemorative stele and a management office were built; in the course of this work the old shrine hall was repaired, while Chunghyodang, Cheongsa Yeongdang (a portrait hall), Jeonsacheong (the hall for preparing offerings) and Gojiksa (the custodian's quarters) were demolished. The old shrine hall and its east and west halls, however, remain on their original site with their original form relatively well preserved. Four kinds of documents in nine items held at Pochungsa are also designated as Gwangju Metropolitan City Tangible Cultural Heritage, as the Documents of Go Gyeong-myeong Held at Pochungsa.
