Wolpyeong Dongsanseong Fortress
월평동산성 · 月坪洞山城

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is a pogok-sik, or valley-enclosing, mountain fortress built along the summit of a hill 137.8 m above sea level in Wolpyeong-dong, Seo-gu, Daejeon; the fortress wall is about 710 m in circumference. A pogok-sik mountain fortress is one whose walls enclose one or more valleys. The walls have largely collapsed, but clear traces of their construction remain. The walls, built along the mountain ridge, were made using natural stones, and part of the western wall retains both its outer and inner faces. The sites of gates remain, one each on the eastern, western and northern walls: the eastern gate site is 5 m wide, and the western gate site, 3.6 m wide, lies midway along the western wall. The northern gate site, 3 m wide, lies in the lowest valley within the fortress; a very flat area nearby suggests that a watercourse once passed through here. Inside the fortress, a ditch 7–12 m wide running along the wall served as a watercourse, and the many flat areas throughout suggest that buildings once stood there. When the Gongju National Museum carried out an excavation in 1995, Baekje-period remains were confirmed, including house sites, storage pits, sections of the wall, and postholes made by driven stakes. Tripod earthenware vessels, pottery stands, roof tiles and a horse saddle were also excavated, allowing the period of use and character of the Wolpyeong-dong fortress to be identified.
