Kim Chwi-ryeo (?–1234) was from Eonyang-hyeon, and his father Kim Bu served as Vice Minister of the Board of Rites. From 1216, the third year of King Gojong of Goryeo, to 1219, the sixth year of King Gojong, he repelled repeated attacks by Khitan forces, saving the country from crisis. At the time, in the political climate of thirteenth-century East Asia, the Mongols were rising rapidly to power; the Khitan, also under attack from the Mongols, crossed the Yalu River in 1216 and were pushed into Goryeo's northern territory. Kim Chwi-ryeo, as Grand General, repelled the Khitan forces at Joyang-jin (Joyang, Gaecheon, South Pyeongan Province), and also broke through a Khitan siege at Yeonju (Yeongbyeon County, North Pyeongan Province). As a result, the Khitan forces withdrew beyond Cheongsae-jin (Huicheon, North Pyeongan Province). His eldest son was killed in this battle. In 1217 he defended against the Khitan forces who came south again, and in 1218, as Byeongmasa, or Military Commissioner, he joined Marshal Jo Chung of the Northwestern Frontier Command to drive the Khitan forces into Gangdongseong Fortress; he then joined forces with the Mongol army and the Eastern Jin state to capture the fortress. He subsequently rose to Munha Sijung, the highest office of the Goryeo period, and was posthumously given the honorific title Wiyeolgong. His tomb, located in Eonyang-eup, has a recently made marble altar, a stone lantern, and new statues of civil and military officials. The gravestone was erected in 1670, the eleventh year of King Hyeonjong, by his descendant Kim Ryeo and the magistrate of Eonyang-hyeon.
