Jeong Yak-yong Tomb
정약용선생묘 · 丁若鏞先生墓

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is the tomb of Jeong Yak-yong (1762–1836), pen name Dasan, a civil official of the reign of King Jeongjo of Joseon and a great master of Silhak, or Practical Learning. He devised the fortification system for Suwon Hwaseong Fortress and built the geojunggi, a pulley-based hoisting device that shortened the construction period, making a great contribution to building the fortress. He devoted himself to scholarly research, leaving behind more than 500 volumes of writing, including Mokminsimseo, Gyeongse Yupyo and Heumheumsinseo, making a great contribution to reforms for the wellbeing of the people. The tomb site takes the form of a single mound, jointly interred with his wife of the Pungsan Hong clan. Most of the stone furnishings of the tomb are newly made, having been rearranged and renewed since the 1970s. A grave marker stands to the right in front of the mound, newly made in 1959. In front of the mound are a soul-resting stone, an offering table, an incense-burner stone and a stone for laying out ritual offerings, all recently installed. To the east of the tomb site stands another grave marker, newly erected in 1974.
