This house was built to commemorate and emulate the conduct of Gang Seo-rin, who was renowned in the late Joseon period for his scholarship, moral virtue and filial devotion. In 1723, the eighth year of King Yeongjo of Joseon, at the recommendation of the Jeolla Provincial Governor Yi Su-hang, the state bestowed the name "Jihaengdang" and funded its construction. Gang Seo-rin's father, Gang Hae-u, was likewise a man of great learning and virtue and utterly devoted to filial piety, and his spirit tablet is enshrined at Hwanggang Seowon in Hyoja-dong, Jeonju. The name Jihaeng (趾行) means "to carry on the virtuous footsteps of one's ancestors for ever." The inscription was composed by Yi Gi-gyeong, who held high office, and the signboard was written by the celebrated calligrapher of the day, Yi Ik-hoe.
