Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krJilhyeonseong Fortress, in Birae-dong, Daedeok-gu, Daejeon, is a mountain fortress built of stone mixed with earth, making use of the terrain at the northern summit of Jiltigogae Pass; it has a circumference of 800 m. The walls were built of squared stones with trimmed corners, set slightly further inward as they rise from the base, with small stones wedged in here and there. Gate sites remain at three points, in the east, west and south walls; of these, the south gate site, 3.8 m wide, served as the most important passage into and out of the fortress. There are no special facilities around the south gate site, but an area of ground about 10 m across is always damp, suggesting it was once the site of a pond. Fragments of Baekje and Silla earthenware and Joseon-period porcelain have been excavated inside the fortress, showing that it remained in continuous use from the Three Kingdoms period through to the Joseon period. On the ridge north of the fortress are six small forts, which appear to have been built to supplement Jilhyeonseong Fortress. Some scholars hold the view that this fortress is Jiraseong, one of the strongholds of the Baekje restoration movement.
