Goseokjeong is a pavilion on the banks of the Hantangang River. The exact date of its construction is unknown, but according to the Sinjeung Dongguk yeoji seungnam, King Jinpyeong of Silla (r. 579-632) and King Chungsuk of Goryeo (r. 1294-1339) both stayed here. There is also a record of the pavilion, the Goseokjeonggi, by the Goryeo monk Muoe, and a poem by Kim Ryang-gyeong, among other writings. According to a story passed down through generations, the righteous outlaw Im Kkeok-jeong hid inside a large hollow in Goseok Rock, which rises in front of the pavilion; the words "Seongji" and "Doryeok" are carved on this rock, and "Yumyeongdae" and "Boneupgeumman" are carved on the wall inside the hollow. The present two-storey pavilion burned down during the Korean War and was rebuilt in concrete in 1971. Sundam refers to a valley 2 km from Goseokjeong, where Yu Cheok-gi (1691-1767), who served as Chief State Councillor under King Yeongjo (r. 1724-1776) of Joseon, once convalesced. The name is said to come from Kim Gwan-ju (1743-1806), who served as Right State Councillor under King Sunjo (r. 1800-1834): he dug a pond of about 20 pyeong (roughly 66 m²), transplanted into it the water plant sunchae (water shield), and named it "Sundam." The site is beautiful for its curiously shaped rocks and sheer, knife-cut cliffs, and it also has a naturally formed white sandy beach, a feature rarely seen in a valley.
