Paryeolbujeonggak Pavilion
팔열부정각 · 八烈婦旌閣

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis pavilion was built to commemorate eight virtuous women (yeolnyeo, women honoured for preserving their fidelity, often at the cost of their lives): the wife of Jeong Ham-il, Lady Yi, and his daughter, Lady Jeong; the wife of Jeong Gyeong-deuk, Lady Park; the wife of Jeong Hui-deuk, Lady Yi; the wife of Jeong Un-gil, Lady O; the wife of Jeong Ju-il, Lady Yi; the wife of Jeong Jeol, Lady Kim; and the wife of Jeong Ho-in, Lady Yi. In 1592, the 30th year of King Seonjo, during the Jeongyu War, on hearing news that their husbands had died fighting Japanese troops, these women fled but were pursued by the enemy, and they are said to have preserved their fidelity by drowning themselves in the sea off Chilsan. In 1681, the seventh year of King Sukjong, a pavilion was erected in Hampyeong, and a monument to their sacrifice was raised at Mukbangpo, the place where they died. The building measures three bays across the front and one bay to the side, with a matbae (gabled) roof that, seen from the side, resembles the Chinese character 人 (person). All four sides are open, without walls, and are enclosed instead by hongsal, lattices of arrow-shaped wooden bars.
