Namwon Gyoryongsanseong Fortress is a mountain fortress built of stone, making use of the natural terrain of Gyoryongsan Mountain, 518 m above sea level; it has a circumference of 3,120 m. Today, the east gate, its entrance shaped like a rainbow, an ongseong (a small auxiliary structure built to protect a gate), and sections of the fortress wall survive here and there. The structure of the wall visible at the well-preserved east gate site and the water gate is important material for the study of Korean fortresses. Inside the fortress are 99 wells and a valley, which suggests it would have served the residents of the surrounding area well for refuge or combat in times of emergency. In the early Joseon period there was a storehouse for military provisions. There is no record of exactly when the mountain fortress was built, but judging from its siting and form, it appears to have been built during the Baekje period.
