Sadeungseong is a stone fortress built on flat farmland in Sadeung-ri, Sadeung-myeon, Geoje, Gyeongsangnam-do. It measures 986m in circumference and 6.1m in height. According to the Annals of the Joseon Dynasty, when the people of Geojedo Island fled to Jinju and Geochang to escape a Japanese invasion in 1271, the twelfth year of King Wonjong of Goryeo, they lived for a time behind a wooden palisade at Suwol-ri; then in 1422, the fourth year of King Sejong, the county office was moved to Sadeung-ri and the fortress was built. It later served as the walled seat of Geoje county until the office was relocated to Gohyeonseong because the fortress was too narrow and lacked water. Stones bearing the carved characters "Saneum (山陰)", "Samga (三加)" and "Sang (裳)" are found in the walls, and L-shaped ongseong — barbican-like outer walls built to protect the gate — are installed at the east, west, south and north gate sites. Around the fortress walls, a moat 20m wide was dug lower than the surrounding fields to strengthen the fortress's defences.
