Bugang River Namseonggolsanseong Fortress
부강 남성골산성 · 芙江 南城谷山城
Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krNamseonggolsanseong Fortress was confirmed, through a trial excavation in 2001 and a first full excavation carried out from 2001 to 2002, to be a wooden palisade fortress equipped with both an inner and an outer enclosure. From its summit, the town of Bugang and the Geumgang River can be seen at a glance, and the view extends to Gyeryongsan Mountain in the south-west and as far as Jochiwon in the north-west. The fortress as a whole consists of the inner fortified area, a low sloping terrace to its north-west, and a ridge terrace to the east. The inner enclosure measures about 300 metres in circumference, and the flat part of the ridge terrace is 16.5 metres wide and 53.5 metres long. A West Gate site has been identified on the flat ground south-west of the summit, and a Northeast Gate site to the east; traces of a stone-built wall north of the gate site suggest a transition from an earlier wooden-palisade phase to a later stone-built phase. Most of the artefacts recovered are fragments of Baekje pottery from the fourth to fifth centuries and Goguryeo relics from the latter half of the fifth century.
