This altar honours the loyalty of Jeong Bal, the Busan Cheomsa (garrison commander of Busan), who defended Busanjinseong Fortress and fought valiantly against the Japanese invaders alongside soldiers and civilians when the Imjin War broke out in 1592, the 25th year of King Seonjo of Joseon, sharing the fortress's fate to the end, together with the soldiers and civilians who died a martyr's death following him. At the centre of the altar stands a stone inscribed with the words "Jeonggongdan"; to the west is enshrined Lee Jeong-heon, an aide to Jeong Bal; to the east, Jeong Bal's concubine, the virtuous woman Aehyang; and to the south, the soldiers and civilians. Beneath the steps on the south side, an altar was also set up for the loyal servant Yongwol. In 1766, the 42nd year of King Yeongjo of Joseon, Lee Gwang-guk, then serving as Busan Cheomsa, established the altar and arranged for memorial rites to be held on the 14th day of the fourth lunar month, the date the fortress fell. During the Japanese colonial period the altar was closed and all its relics and fittings confiscated, on the grounds that it awakened national spirit, but after liberation the altar was rebuilt, the old stele recovered and re-erected, and memorial rites have been held there ever since.
