Bomunsanseong is a fortress built using the natural terrain of the summit of Bomunsan Mountain (406m above sea level) in Daesa-dong, Jung-gu, Daejeon. It has a circumference of 300m. The walls were built using roughly dressed square stones following the natural topography, with the outer face laid slightly inward at each course so that it would not easily collapse. On the steep, rock-faced slopes to the east and north, no separate wall was built. Excavation confirmed the site of the south gate, and the north gate, which is still used as a passage today, shows that during the Goryeo period the gate opening was narrowed for use. Beneath the eastern wall, a late Bronze Age dwelling site was found, along with plain pottery and pottery decorated with raised clay strips. The fortress is thought to have been built at a time of fierce fighting between Baekje and Silla toward the end of Baekje, with the aim of maintaining easy communication with nearby mountain fortresses.
