This is where General Yi Sun-sin (Chungmugong) stayed from October 1597, the 30th year of King Seonjo of Joseon, during the Jeongyu War, until March of the following year, gathering military provisions and supplies in preparation for battle. Here he built a stone wall along the south and west sides, 1 km long, 2 m high and 1 m wide, to distinguish enemy ships from his own; to raise military funds he required passing ships to hand over one to three seok of grain (a traditional unit of volume for grain, roughly 180 litres) in exchange for a pass, and in this way stockpiled ten thousand seok of provisions within ten days. He is also said to have made weapons and built ships here while reorganising his forces.
