This altar is a memorial altar built in 1742, the 18th year of King Yeongjo, by Kim Seok-il, the magistrate of Dongnae. It was originally set up on the site of Jeongwollu Pavilion, where Song Sang-hyeon, the magistrate of Dongnae, died a martyr's death during the Japanese invasions of 1592–98, and it honours Song Sang-hyeon together with others who died defending Dongnae Fortress. Before this altar was built, a war-dead memorial altar had already been erected at Nongjusan (now the site of Dongnae Police Station), outside the south gate of Dongnae walled town, honouring Song Sang-hyeon, magistrate of Dongnae; Jo Yeong-gyu, magistrate of Yangsan; No Gae-bang, instructor of Dongnae; and others who fell defending Dongnae Fortress. When Songgongdan Altar was built in 1742, this memorial was moved to the new site. Songgongdan Altar originally consisted of four altars set to the north, east, west and south. The northern altar enshrined Song Sang-hyeon, Jo Yeong-gyu, No Gae-bang and others; the eastern altar the Confucian scholar Mun Deok-gyeom and others; the western altar Song Sang-hyeon's concubine Geumseom and others; and the southern altar the local clerk Song Baek and others. The local government held a memorial rite there every year on the 15th day of the fourth lunar month. In 1760, the 35th year of King Yeongjo, Hong Myeong-han, magistrate of Dongnae, following public opinion, enshrined Yi Jeong-heon, who had died in battle together with Jeong Bal, commander of Busanjin. In 1766, the 42nd year of King Yeongjo, Yun Heung-sin, commander of Dadaepo, was also enshrined and included in the rites. Afterwards, those who had not died in battle at Dongnae Fortress itself ceased to be honoured here; accordingly, those who died at Dadaepo were transferred to Yungongdan Altar, and those who died at Busanjin to Jeonggongdan Altar. From the Japanese colonial period onward, the Dongnae Giyeonghoe association has held a memorial rite every year on the 15th day of the fourth lunar month, the anniversary of the martyrdom. In November 2005 the altar was restored to the form recorded in the 1767 Chungnyeolsaji (Record of Chungnyeolsa Shrine), and it now consists of seven altars with fifteen monuments. The main altar bears the stele to Song Sang-hyeon's martyrdom; the eastern altar enshrines Jo Yeong-gyu and No Gae-bang; the western altar Mun Deok-gyeom and others; and a separate altar Song Sang-hyeon's concubine Geumseom and others.
